The title may be lost on some of my younger readers, as that major snafu on the part of the Chicago newspaper didn’t get much attention after the 60’s. For those who just won’t follow links for ‘the rest of the story’, a major newspaper was trying to get the jump on reporting the results for the 1948 election, and thus released an early edition of their paper with the headline “Dewey Defeats Truman”. Most people have misremembered that to have said “Dewey Wins!” Close enough for me, and the shorter one is easier to use.

No politics, no agenda. Just pausing to commemorate the innocent victims and the truly brave rescue personnel who lost their lives on this date 7 years ago.

My parent’s generation had their own day they would always remember, Dec 7. For our generation, it will be Sep 11. I don’t spend a lot of time wishing or hoping, but if i did i would hope that if future generations have a similar experience with always remembering a certain date, that it will be the day that something wonderful happens, instead of the tragedies which we remember.

The Republican’s know that their last 7 years have been a disaster for this country. They know that the man who they believed was the best person to lead America has turned out to be the worst one to do so They know that only the die-hard fanatic right will tolerate any more of the same policies and practices that have come from their party. So, for this cycle they have settled on someone they think they can sell as an ‘outsider’, a ‘maverick’ who will bring ‘change’ to Washington and save us from the results of their last seven years of corruption and gridlock. They think you are stupid enough to believe it, and i guess they also think you are stupid enough to forget that it was them who brought us to this point.

Obama’s main theme, ‘Change’, has been picked up by the Republicans. They claim that they are better equipped to provide change for the middle class. I have to agree, they are correct.

After all, the last 4 years have shown conclusively that Republican policies will steer the dollar bills to their friends and contributors from the wealthy class. The middle class only gets ‘the change’.

Some time back Obama was asked how he would react if one of his daughters ended up pregnant. He spoke frankly about the subject, as he does on any subject. The fundamentalist response … as could be expected… missed the real world aspects of his reply.

I’ve recently heard them remark on a less hypothetical situation regarding the pregnancy of the daughter of their good Christian VP nominee. In doing so, they parroted a line they use far too often. This seems as good a time as any to give my rebuttal to that line.

Or, at minimum, they appear incapable of leading the child. You cannot make this stuff up!

You have probably heard by now that the teenage daughter of the person who is McCain’s “best possible choice for VP” got herself knocked up. Obama came out immediately saying that this topic is off limits for his campaign staff, and that he would fire anyone who didn’t respect his position that “family members, especially children, are not to be the subject of political attacks.” Obama has generally displayed that level of class throughout his campaign, so it’s no surprise to me that he refuses to use this situation to his political advantage.

There are two points that should be stated clearly before i continue:
1. I don’t work for the Obama campaign.
2. I do not have class.

In the 60’s, when some people were coming to understand that there was nothing shameful to them about their skin color, the expression “Say it loud, I’m black and proud” was created to summarize that enabling and ennobling concept. I’m fairly sure that the simple act of saying it was probably quite empowering to a group of people many of whom had previously gone to great lengths to lighten their skin or straighten their hair. Today, i’m making an analogous comment. I will no longer allow myself to be shamed for the color of my own skin, or my gender, either.

OK, i’m repeating myself here, but some things bear repeating.

Creationists are still trying stealth tactics to force schools to “teach the controversy” about evolution. The ACLU, and every scientific organization in the US are fighting this at every chance. I think they’re missing an opportunity to REALLY help educate our children. I say: Hell YES, let’s do use this as an opportunity to help children learn critical thinking skills by using the topic of evolution as a case study. For that matter, they want “Bible Study” classes in public schools. I say: Let’s do that, too.

Earlier this year the calendar placed me at 55 years here on spaceship earth. I stopped celebrating my birthday at that time a few years back, moving it to today instead to allow better weather for the associated festivities. This year, i have dropped the whole idea of celebrating it. It just doesn’t feel right… though i cannot exactly explain why without going to some dark places which are best not visited. But… tomorrow is the anniversary of the day when a pretty darn cool dude was unleashed upon an unsuspecting world, and i don’t want that day to go un-noted.

Jason Carl Ruddy, a.k.a just about any combination of ASCII characters, born May 24, 1973 in Biloxi Mississippi at 9:33 PM after 25 hours of labor and weighing in at 7/7 is 35 tomorrow, and preparing along with his wife, Momoko, for the birth of their first child . He’s just now at what i see as the prime of a person’s life, and i wanted to tell him - and anyone else who is reading this - that i think he’s made good use of the last 35 years… and i believe that he will make even better use of the next ones.

Jason, you rock! Hobappobby Bobirtdobbay!

I’ve never understood why people place so much power into words. If i say to a female: “you are a woman that i do not like”, i’m conveying EXACTLY the same meaning if i were to call her “a bitch”. She may accept the first comment at face value, but the latter one will generally arouse some anger. God help me if i had called her a “cunt” instead.

Similarly, the word “nigger” seems to have even more magical powers than the words “bitch” and “cunt”. It’s use gets broadcasters fired, ends a comedian’s career, and will NOT be spoken by almost any white person these days. Somehow the synonym “N-Word” can be used in its place, but only in a clinical discussion about how someone else used the word ‘nigger’. Heck, you’re in jeopardy even using any words that sound like nigger, as became painfully clear to David Howard back in 1999!

I do care about the feelings of all people, but this has all gone too far, and more to MY point, there’s a distinct double standard in operation at all times.

I haven’t been posting much lately. Far too much going on in too many areas. I hope to get back to the blog by early next week. My apologies to anyone who may feel neglected :-).

» 2007-01-09. I’m still waiting for the kidney stone to pass, and my voice is still all messed up from the bouts of ‘reverse parastalsis’ i experienced when this first started. Pain levels vary, but the medications i’m on are keeping that tolerable. Right this minute, my Urethra is suddenly demanding some R-E-S-P-E-C-T! I hope that means i’m getting some movement of the stone. By the way… the meds are NOT the true source of my recent satirical article Re the apocalypse, in spite of any assertions to the contrary :). The current downtime allowed me to address it, but i’ve had that piece mentally queued for quite a while. Stand by for my follow-up on why fundamentalists should be actively supporting the theory of evolution :-).  # 1

2006-11-01. I may be incommunicado (computer-wise) for a few days. I purchased some additional RAM for my machine a while back. Since then i’ve been having intermittent freezes. I’m taking the machine in for a RAM swap, but there’s always the possibility that there’s a deeper problem which will require leaving it at the shop.

2006-09-25. The long downtime continues. The pain in my arm has lessened, but i have subsequently developed some nasty flu symptoms. I verified that i don’t fit the “West Nile Virus” profile, something they are very concerned about at the blood bank where i donated a few weeks ago, but beyond that i don’t know what i’ve had these ever-shifting issues the last week or so.

2006-09-21. Sorry about the long downtime. I have a problem with my neck and right arm, and i’m trying to minimize use of the arm.

Melissa and i had a good visit with her sister’s family near St. Louis. More on that when i’m able to write better. I had hoped to visit Mike swing while i was there, but the time i planned to go was cancelled due to poor visibility for driving (night + rain = radar can’t see).

I may be in the market for a new PC sometime in the next few months. The one Darren helped me put together 4 years ago is no longer able to play cutting edge games. No rush, as i’ve started playing Starcraft again.

2006-09-15. I’ll be offline for a few days, so my output level here will drop to zero. Melissa and i will be out of town for the weekend.

In our absence, my room mate and his girl friend will be staying here. I’m betting that after a few nights sleeping in our king size bed they’ll be ready for an upgrade of their normal sleeping accommodations!

I’ve shown Jason’s Nike commercial to a few more folks. I like it better each time i see it.

2006-09-13.

Yesterday was my mom’s 82nd birthday. My visit to her was less stressful than the previous ones.

We’re planning a trip to visit Melissa’s sister soon, so i took the car in for some new tires (yet another flat this week from an imbedded screw, decided to replace the bad one since tread was low).

I’m looking forward to a visit from Mark tomorrow to finally get the day of playing WoW that an unscheduled downtime cheated us out of last week.

Mary hit her head HARD last week and has been having problems (headaches, etc.) since then. We’re worried about her.

Melissa made her Chicken Parmesan dish last evening. Oh so yummy. Mary became ill at work and had to cancel her attendance, but Mark and i did our part to make up for the availability of even more food for us without complaining. After Melissa went to bed, Nancy stopped by around 10PM on her way home from WSU for a plate, and then Alec arrived home from work around Midnight. I’ve considered locking the door when she makes this dish, but so far we like the calibre of people it has been attracting :-).

We spent yesterday afternoon/evening with Mark & Mary. Dang that boy can cook! This morning our house carries the strong scent of the sauce Melissa is making for the Chicken parmesan dish she will make for them when they come here on Thursday for dinner. All good food all the way around. The kittens they rescued are doing well. They now have their eyes open. Mary’s daughter Jenny was there for dinner. She’s a very pleasant person to chat with. She currently attends OSU where she is working on a degree in veterinary medicine.
